Vampire Facial: What Is a PRP Vampire Facial?

October 18, 2023

Halloween is just around the corner, so it’s the perfect time for a vampire facial! Well, frankly, every season is a good time for this incredible rejuvenating treatment. Don’t worry – it’s not nearly as scary as the name implies. Understanding how vampire facials work will help assuage any fears, and to decide if this treatment might be right for you!

What Is a Vampire Facial?

A vampire facial is a treatment that combines microneedling with PRP to utterly transform the skin. It’s incredible at reducing fine lines and acne scars, but can also help with other concerns. It can reduce skin sagging, smooth out texture, and improve overall skin tone and luminosity.

Despite the name, it’s actually a minimally invasive treatment without much downtime or pain.

The vampire facial combines two evidence-based approaches to skin renewal that have been around for a long time. First, there’s microneedling, a treatment that relies on micro-injuries with tiny needles to stimulate the skin’s own self-healing mechanism, to actively repair existing damage. The needles are small with a targeted depth level which ensures zero actual skin damage

Microneedling can already do wonders on its own, but adding PRP significantly improves the healing cascade. PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, which is a liquid extracted from the patient’s own blood and explains the name of the treatment. PRP is loaded with the body’s own growth factors which stimulate faster, more dramatic results with fewer treatment sessions.

Before a vampire facial, blood is drawn and centrifuged, which separates the PRP from red blood cells. Then, using an advanced microneedling device, the PRP is injected evenly into the specific level of skin where the healing cascade will address the patient’s specific concerns.

Vampire Facial Benefits

So what are the precise benefits of a vampire facial? A vampire facial can help with nearly every type of skin concern, and its exceptional tolerability also makes it stand out.

Here are the key reasons why you may want to try it:

  • Tighten theskin by enhancing collagen induction
  • Reduce wrinkles and fine lines
  • Diminish the look of scars, especially boxcar and rolling acne scars
  • Improves overall skin texture and reduces pore size
  • Cleared and more even skin tone
  • Very low risk of allergies or skin irritation
  • Almost no downtime – you’ll be able to return to your daily life within less than a day

At Discovery Laser, we often opt for a combination vampire facial that injects both PRP and Redensity, a microdroplet filler of hyaluronic acid. This ensures that your skin will look glowy, plump, firm, and hydrated with a single treatment.

How Much Does a Vampire Facial Cost?

A single vampire facial treating the entire face normally costs around $1000. Treating smaller areas like just underneath the eyes can cost less. For profound results, however, it’s important to undergo several treatments – at Discovery Laser, our treatment and package options range from $790-$2000 CAD, and you can always reach out to us for a specific quote based on your needs!

Vampire Facial Side Effects and Recovery

A vampire facial is considered a minimally invasive procedure, and most patients don’t require any downtime. That said, you should go into it aware of the main vampire facial side effects:

  • Mild redness, swelling, and tenderness immediately following treatment.
  • On very rare occasions, mild bruising may also occur.
  • Allergies and infections are rare since all the products involved in this procedure are sterile, and it’s uncommon to have reactions to one’s own plasma.
  • Your skin will be a little more sensitive to the sun, so you’ll need to wear sunscreen diligently. Check out our guide to the best sunscreens to learn about some excellent post-vampire facial sunscreen options.

Vampire Facial Before and After

Knowing what to expect before and after your vampire facial will help ensure you have the best recovery and results.

Prior to your appointment, we will always conduct a thorough consultation at Discovery Laser, to ensure that a vampire facial is right for you. It’s best to come to your appointment well-rested, well-hydrated, and with clean skin.

Before a vampire facial, we will normally apply a numbing cream to the entire face, which will help prevent pain, for an experience that is mildly uncomfortable at worst. Then, we will withdraw a bit of blood, and process it to separate the platelet-rich plasma.

Photos of the treatment can seem a little intimidating, but the skin actually bounces back and then improves fairly quickly after a vampire facial. Your skin will probably look somewhat red or swollen for the first day or so, which is normal.

You won’t notice the impact of the microneedling right away, though. The vampire facial jumpstarts your skin’s healing and self-renewal mechanisms, so the best results show after several weeks, once your skin has had a chance to produce new collagen and elastin.
