Masseter Botox: What It Is, Costs, and Aftercare

December 12, 2023

Target jaw pain and refine your jawline with masseter Botox. This jawline Botox treatment is a game-changer that can improve your quality of life and help you feel more confident about the shape of your face.

In this post, we’ll cover everything you need to know about how masseter Botox works. We’ll explain who it’s for, how much it costs, and what you can expect before and after a masseter Botox treatment. Let’s dive in!

What Is Masseter Botox?

Masseter Botox is a treatment where Botox, a muscle-paralyzing neuromodulator, is injected into the masseter, which is the main muscle in the jaw. It’s incredibly beneficial for anyone who experiences jaw tension and it can also help create a slimmer or rounder jawline.

Botox works by stopping the muscle’s ability to contract, effectively forcing it to relax. When injected into the masseter, it prevents it from tightening up too much, which can help eliminate tension and allow the muscle to shrink slightly over time.

During the treatment, your medical provider will inject the Botox into a few spots in your masseter. It’ll feel like a small pinprick, and according to most patients, it’s not particularly painful. It’s a quick and easy treatment that shows results within a couple of weeks.

Why Should You Get Masseter Botox?

There are two main reasons why you might want to get jawline Botox — the first is therapeutic while the second is aesthetic.

If you experience any tension or discomfort because of an over-active or tight masseter, Botox for TMJ can offer immense relief. It’s very popular for those with TMJ disorders because it prevents the grinding or tension that can cause headaches, jaw pain, and even damage to teeth.

On an aesthetic level, you may want to get Botox in the masseter if you find that your jawline is too prominent, which can come hand in hand with having an overactive masseter. It can soften a large or square jawline and create a slim V shape that many women covet.

Masseter Botox Before and After

It’s important to know what to expect before and after your masseter Botox appointment, so let’s get into it!

Before your appointment, let your provider know about your medical history and any medications that you’re taking. We recommend that you avoid taking drinking alcohol and taking any non-steroidal inflammatories. Right before treatment, your injector will analyze your face and let you know what you can expect from the process.

After your masseter Botox injection, you may experience some mild swelling, tenderness, or bruising, although it’s not common. The effects will begin to take hold in the days after the treatment.

It’ll reach its maximal muscle-relaxing effect within about two weeks. If your goal is to see a slimmer shape, that might take longer and may even require multiple injections,  since the masseter can take a long time to atrophy.

There are a few important masseter Botox aftercare steps you should follow, as well:

  • Avoid lying down or bending forward for 4 hours after your treatment.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours after the injection.
  • Avoid touching or massaging the treatment area — moving your face is okay, however.
  • Additionally, follow any other precautions recommended by your provider!
  • If you experience any unusual side effects, please seek medical care.

Masseter Botox Costs

Masseter Botox costs, on average, between $400 and $1000 per treatment, depending on the size of the muscle and the level of tension you’re experiencing. Botox prices are based on the number of units needed. Because the masseter muscle is incredibly strong, Botox for TMJ often requires more product compared to areas like the forehead or between the brows. While some patients might only need 20 units per side, the majority will require at least 30.

FAQ

How long does masseter Botox last?

Masseter Botox usually lasts for around 3 to 6 months. With repeated treatments, we find that patients can wait longer and longer between treatments.

When will I see the results from my masseter Botox treatment?

It normally takes around two weeks for Botox to reach its full effects. That’s when you’ll notice that your jaw no longer clenches or holds tension. As a result of that, your masseter will begin to shrink over time, although it may take several months to reach your desired face shape.

How many units are needed for masseter Botox?

Most patients will need around 30 units of Botox per side for their masseter treatment, which comes out to 60 units. That said, the precise number will vary from person to person.
