Sagging jaw lines and marionette lines

Gravity comes for all of us eventually. For many, seeing a sagging jawline and marionette lines can be one of the most distressing signs of getting older. The skin’s ability to stay firm wanes with age, but new innovations in non-surgical skin tightening have made it possible to turn back those signs of the times. If you’ve noticed that your nasolabial folds have gotten deeper or that your jawline isn’t as defined as it once was, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

Jawline Sagging and Marionette Line Causes

One of the major processes that slow down with age is the skin’s ability to generate connective proteins like collagen and elastin. Collagen is responsible for the skin’s firmness and structure while elastin adds that stretchy touch.

When the skin has fewer of those proteins, it loses its ability to stay firm despite the pull of gravity. That’s what leads to jawline sagging, marionette lines, as well as other wrinkles all over the body.

Best Treatments for Marionette Lines and Sagging Jawline

The key to treating marionette lines and general loss of tone is by encouraging the skin to produce new collagen and elastin. At Discovery Laser, we offer a broad range of non-surgical skin tightening treatments that do just that!

Sylfirm X Dual Wave RF-Microneedling

Microneedling with radiofrequency is one of our most effective treatments for sagging skin. We combine the two technologies in order to induce optimal skin stimulation. The microneedles penetrate the skin and cause targeted microtrauma that promotes regeneration. Then, they deliver radiofrequency energy that ensures even further stimulation and better collagen and elastin production.

Laser Treatments

Laser skin tightening is another phenomenal skin-firming option. Laser is a powerful, single-wavelength light that is able to target and stimulate collagen and elastin in the dermis levels of the skin.

That deeper layer is where collagen and elastin loss causes sagging in the first place, so by stimulating new production we can lift and tone the skin to minimize sagging jowls or marionette lines. As a bonus, this treatment also enhances your skin tone and reduces the severity of fine lines!

Dermal Fillers

In some cases, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can present the perfect fix for marionette lines and jowls. Our expert injector adds a hint of Juvederm Voluma to the cheeks, where loss of tone often leads to a sunken look. This gives the lower half of the face an all-over lift, for softer marionette lines and a firmer-looking jawline.

Sagging jaw lines and marionette lines FAQ

Probably not. Often, the opposite is true – losing weight leads to volume loss in the face, which makes the jowls and marionette line a little more prominent.

The only circumstance where weight loss might help is if your “marionette lines” seem more prominent because of excess volume in the part of the cheeks directly next to the nasolabial fold. However, there’s still the risk that volume loss will exacerbate the lines once you lose weight.

Ultimately, weight loss is worth pursuing if you’re at an unhealthy BMI and it’s been recommended by your doctor, but otherwise, it’s not a marionette line remedy.

In most cases, Botox isn’t a good treatment for marionette lines and jowls. Botox stops muscle contractions that lead to expression wrinkles, so it’s recommended for frown lines and forehead wrinkles.

Marionette lines and jowls, on the other hand, are caused by loss of skin firmness so they respond better to dermal fillers or treatments that encourage deep collagen production.
